Vintage Culture: Resident Rockstar

Thursday, Aug 17, 2023

Over the past decade, Lukas Ruiz AKA Vintage Culture has grown to become a global electronic icon and one of the most in-demand performers in the scene.

Born and raised in the small town of Mundo Novo, just on Brazil’s border with Paraguay. Growing up in such a remote location, with no internet, Lukas passed the time delving into his father’s record collection of bands like New Order, Pink Floyd and Depeche Mode. When the family finally got a computer Lukas loaded it up with production software and began learning the basics of production.

While studying law at University, finally with a constant internet connection, Lukas threw himself headfirst into producing, learning everything he could about how his favourite artists created their sounds. Lukas began creating his own remixes of the bands he’d listened to as a child, and one day uploaded his remix of “Another Brick In The Wall” by Pink Floyd to SoundCloud.

Local DJs started playing the remix in their sets, and before long he was getting contacted to play parties across Brazil. After creating enough productions he was happy with to fill a set, Lukas released his first official single “What You Want” under the artist name Vintage Culture - a nod to the bands that started him on his musical journey.

Vintage Culture began to get traction across Brazil just as the local crowd were growing weary of the stadium EDM that was prevalent at the time. Alongside Alok and Victor Ruiz, Vintage Culture helped pioneer a new scene based around deeper, slower, more club-focused sounds.

His Brazilian fame led to him founding his own So Track Boa Festival, being profiled on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, and making the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. In 2016 his remix of the Sofi Tucker track “Drinkee” became his breakout international success and led to a string of huge hits, including collaborating with Tiësto on “Coffee”, releasing “It Is What It Is” on Defected, remixing The Martinez Brothers and Louie Vega’s “Let It Go” and “Slow Down” by Maverick Sabre featuring Jorja Smith.

Alongside his international chart toppers came bookings from across the globe and in 2023, Vintage Culture has one of the busiest schedules in the business. Alongside joining the ANTS family as a resident, he also hosts his Wednesday night residency at Hï Ibiza’s Club Room.

Lukas makes no secret of his love for performing and has developed a reputation for marathon DJ sets. Often playing for 8 hours or more from sunset to sunrise, he has completed many 24-hour sets over his career and has even played for a staggering 50 hours during his own personal best.

His prodigious stints behind the decks are matched by jaw-dropping studio output, with a seemingly limitless string of top-quality releases seeing him a permanent fixture at the top of the Beatport charts and gaining him over 2 Billion streams worldwide. Despite this global success and demanding work schedule, Lukas still finds ways to give back to his home country. In 2020 his track “Só Track Boa” raised over $100,000 for homeless Brazilians.

Vintage Culture will perform throughout the summer for ANTS 10 YEARS STRONG at Ushuaïa Ibiza, including going B2B with ANTS favourite Wade on Saturday 19th August.
